Daily Gospel

READING OF THE DAY

Fisrt reading from the Book of  Ecclesiastes
Ecc 1:2; 2:21-23

Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth,
vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!

Here is one who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill,
and yet to another who has not labored over it,
he must leave property.
This also is vanity and a great misfortune.
For what profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart
with which he has labored under the sun?
All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation;
even at night his mind is not at rest.
This also is vanity.

Second reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Colossians
Col 3:1-5, 9-11

Brothers and sisters:
If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above,
where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.
For you have died,
and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ your life appears,
then you too will appear with him in glory.

Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly:
immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire,
and the greed that is idolatry.
Stop lying to one another,
since you have taken off the old self with its practices
and have put on the new self,
which is being renewed, for knowledge,
in the image of its creator.
Here there is not Greek and Jew,
circumcision and uncircumcision,
barbarian, Scythian, slave, free;
but Christ is all and in all.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

From the Gospel according to Luke
Lk 12:13-21

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus,
“Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.”
He replied to him,
“Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?”
Then he said to the crowd,
“Take care to guard against all greed,
for though one may be rich,
one’s life does not consist of possessions.”

Then he told them a parable.
“There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest.
He asked himself, ‘What shall I do,
for I do not have space to store my harvest?’
And he said, ‘This is what I shall do:
I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones.
There I shall store all my grain and other goods
and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you,
you have so many good things stored up for many years,
rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’
But God said to him,
‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you;
and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’
Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves
but are not rich in what matters to God.”

Sunday of 18th Week in Ordinary Time

(Luke 12:13-21)

The Word of God for Us

 Dear People of God,

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the rich man. All his life, he only knew how to accumulate wealth for himself, how foolish he was because he did not know that he would have to die and would leave all that he had accumulated in this world for others.

Through the story of the rich man, Jesus wants to make it clear to people: do not covet worldly wealth, because it will pass away and cannot give man eternal life; Wordly wealth is just a means to help people get rich before God.

The rich man takes care of worldly material wealth and accumulates it for himself. He did not know how to share and distribute it to his fellow men. Therefore, he was unable to secure Eternal Life in the Kingdom of God.

Only God has total authority over human life and death. God will give eternal life to those who fully believe and trust completely in His power. He will give his happy Kingdom to those who know how to live and practice according to God’s Word, which is: living in love, forgiveness, humility, self-humiliation, sacrifice, patience, sharing, and support his fellow brothers and sisters. Such a life is pleasing to God, and He will guarantee them Eternal Life.

As for those who only care about accumulating wealth for themselves, concerning about getting rich in front of people for self – indulgence and enjoyment, but do not know how to live in love and charity for their fellow brothers and sisters, those who that will not guarantee their eternal life as the image of a rich man.

Through today’s parable, God wants to remind people that:

– Worldly possessions are fleeting and do not bring eternal life to man.

– Only a life of charity, love, fear of God alone, knowing how to love one’s neighbor as oneself, and knowing how to share can those possessions be valuable to buy the Kingdom of Heaven.

God has always loved people. Therefore, He gave up all glory in the Kingdom of Heaven and came down to earth as a human to save people, to accompany and teach people the words of God the Father, to help people convert and give up their ways of sin, return to be reconciled to God, and follow God’s instructions to live in love. Those who believe and live according to God’s Word will ensure that they will have heavenly life in the future.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
